1-    Picture Book

Title: "Good Night Moon”

Author: Margaret Wise Brown
Publisher: Harper and Brothers
Publication Date: September 3, 1947

This book is another one of my favorites. This book is the perfect bedtime story as the bunny is saying goodnight to everything around him, he says goodnight room, goodnight moon, then continues to point out everything around him that he lays eyes on. The pictures really bring the story to life and everything around that he is wishing goodnight to. I give this story a 5/5, I think it’s a great story but also good for parental engagement while reading the story to their child.

Title: If you Give a mouse a Cookie

This is a Story about a mouse who seemed to never be satisfied. Once you gave him something he wanted more and more and more. I give this book a 5/5. The books pictures paid close attention to detail. The book reminded me of my kids too which made you chuckle!
At the end of the story he askes for the same thing. A COOKIE.

Title: Oh, the Places you'll go.
Author: Dr. Seuss
Publication Date: January 22, 1990
Publisher : Random house

This book has gotten extremely popular over the years. Some trends now are having every English teach from kindergarten to high school sign the book. The book centers around a person  who decides to travel all over, he ends up in a waiting town where people are stuck waiting for things to happen. Which is a horribly boring place. Then the book jumps right back to happiness traveling and exploring. I give this book a 5/5. It has a good lesson around it. It shows you not to sit and wait for things to happen and to be a doer! This book was also greatly illustrated.

2-    Beginning reader

Title: Junie B. Jones
Author: Barbara Park
Publisher: Random House

These are the first books I can ever remember reading myself. These books were comical and real. The books consisted of a silly kindergarten who shares her journey though her year with us. These are all chapter books, and it comes in a box set. The first book iis Junie talking about her smelly bus and the hatred for her middle name. I give this book a 5/5. I feel like a lot of beginning readers can relate to Junie, especially when it comes to not having perfect grammar.

3-    Traditional tale

Title: Cinderlla
Author: RH Disney
Publisher: Golden/Disney

This book will forever be my favorite traditional tale. This has the once upon a time start and the happily ever after finish. This book captured my emotions as a young child by feeling awful of the treatment of Cinderella. Then there was the surprise of the fairy godmother who gave us hope for her, and finally getting her happily ever after with her prince. This book was a great fairy tale and could keep readers both young and old captivated. I give this book 5/5 for keeping the princess in all girls alive.

4-    Realistic fiction
Title: No, David!
Author: David Shannon
Publisher: Blue Sky Press
Publication Date: September 1, 1998
No, David! is a book I was exposed to earlier this year, and honestly it wasn’t my favorite at first. I thought “why are they portraying this mom to be so mean”?  “why is this kid not listening” but the book even though was made up was so real. The book shows a young child constantly getting into things he is not supposed to be and his mother correcting him. The book though, is real life things that happen. It’s a mischievous boy just being a kid. Its cute. I give this book a 4/5. I think its funny too but also, the mom is not mean! She is just being a mom ha-ha. I think the kids really get a kick out of it.

5-    Fantasy
Title: Harry Potter
Author: J.K Rowling
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
Publication Date: June 26, 1997 – July 21, 2007
I must admit I never jumped on the Harry Potter bandwagon. It took me 2 years to read 3 books. It was never a huge interest for me, so I was never good at reading them. My 13-year-old just fell in love recently with the book/movies/anything harry potter. This book does a great job of bringing things to life. The creatures, magic, characters, wizards etc. It’s a true fantasy that really brings you into a different world. I give this book 3/5, again because it just really did not interest me. However, I see how much this story has captivated the mind of my young reader and I love this book for that.

Comments

  1. I agree that the mother in 'No, David!' can be portrayed poorly, but the story is very relatable for a lot of children I am sure! The illustrations within it are also so eye-catching and engaging, I think that children would really enjoy that book.

  2. I saw that you reviewed Harry Potter and that you jumped on the band wagon. Well to be honest I refused to do so and based off your review I am glad I never did

  3. I remember Junie B Jones from childhood too. You gave a very good description of those books. I wonder if children today read them because there are organizations that want to ban those books because Junie B Jones talks back a lot. The world we live in.
