Title: The Emperor's Egg
Author: Lois Lowry
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin
Publication Date: September 3, 1947

I chose this book because of course my favorite animal is a penguin. In this book it teaches the younique way penguins do things. Normally you are used to mothers taking care of their young but this story shows you how is is not the case for penguins. The dad goes through all costs to keep the penguin egg safe. I give this book a 5/5 its both cute and informative.

My daughter was gifted this book a few years ago and I feel inlove with it myself. The book goes through Firefighters, police officers, and emts. It explains their job and why they can not always be there for their families. I give this book a 5/5 for first responder families. My husband is a police officer and my daughter is always asked why her dad could not go. I feel like this story is comforting knowing that theyre not alone. Title: Number the stars
Author: Lois Lowry
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin
Publication Date: September 3, 1947
For Historical fiction I chose number the Stars. I chose this book because this is the first book I have ever read that captivated my attention. This is about a little girl who lives through world war II and is escaping it with her family. The Johansen family helps the main character, Annemarie's Jewish best friend. They pretend that she the Annemaire's sister who had passed away to keep her out of the hands of the Nazi soilders. I give this book a 5/5. I think this book allows you to see the horrific events that unfolded during WWII. It also lets you see it from the eyes of a kid. One of her biggest things she focus on in the book is the cup cakes she misses. My english teacher acutally brought us in sugarless cupcakes to try while we read this story.

Poems for Children

Title: Where the Sidewalk Ends
Author: Shel Silverstein
Publisher: Harper and Row
Publication Date: 1974

I always rented this book from the school library when I was a kid. This book is fun, it is filled with all different types of poems. Some of the poems are long and some are pretty short. This was the first place I was ever introduced to Edgar Allen Poe. I give this book a 4/5. I wouldn't recommend for people who really do not enjoy poetry but also, some of the poems I did not enjoy and just skipped over.

Title: Sisters
Author: Raina Telgemeier
Publisher: Scholastic/ Graphix

This story reminds me of my daughters and my 13 year old read it when she was younger. This is about a girl who is on vacation with her family but they are traveling long distance. In the story the charters venture through their relationships as sisters. I give this book a 3/5. I think it is a cute book if you have sisters. To me I could not really relate to it having 2 brothers.

  2. Raina Telgemeier has published several graphic novels in recent years. They all focus on topics applicable for preteens/teens. Both of my sons enjoy her graphic novels. The illustration style is quite easy to pick out and lends continuity across her books, even if the characters change.
